- W2738986 abstract "NEW ACQUISITION In 1977, rhe 150th anniversary of Beethoven's death, Ira Brilliant purchased the first issue of the first score edition of the Ninth Symphony from the respected American antiquariat William Salloch of Ossining, New York. One of the most treasured objects in his collection, the score includes the prized subscriber's list. This pristine treasure was included among the seventy-five first editions Ira donated to SJSU to found the Beethoven Center in 1983. In 1997, with fimding support from Ira, the Center and American Beethoven Society acquired the first edition of the vocal score of the last movement and the four solo vocal parts printed from the plates of the first edition from the famous German antiquarian dealer Hans Schneider of Tutzing. We are delighted to announce that, thanks to rhe members of the Manuscript Club of the American Beethoven Society, the first edition of die set of instrumental parts has been acquired at a Sotheby's, London auction on June 8, 2011, helping to fill in our set of first editions for what is perhaps the most popular and influential symphony ever composed. This set of parts was used on multiple occasions, as is clear from the annotations to the score in pencil, blue pencil, and red pencil (see, for example, the first violin part reproduced here). According to an annotation at the top of the second bassoon part, the set was used for at least one Benefiz concert, and signed the same part at the end of the third movement in Warsaw in [18]96. This is probably the same Carl Schaefer who would go on to become the bassoon virtuoso, editor, and first bassoonist with the Opera and Gewandhaus Orchestra and teacher at rhe Landeskonservarorium zu Leipzig in the twentieth century. According to a communication from Beethoven scholar Theodore AIbrecht, Schaefer (b. Berlin, March 30, 1876; d. Leipzig, October 5, 1954) one season each in several orchestras between 1892 and 1899. He spent rhe season 1895-96 in Warsaw. After 1898-99 in Meiningen, he went to Leipzig for the rest of his career. Depending on the date of rhe Warsaw performance of rhe Ninth in 1896, Schaefer would have been either nineteen or twenty. With the exception of the two violoncello parts, the fourth movement contains no annotations in the pans, strongly suggesting that it was omitted on most performances using this set. The tact that the triangle, cymbals, and tambourine parts are still bound and taped together, making them unplayable as separate parts, supports this notion. Although undated and unsigned, the blue annotations appear to belong to a 20ch-century performance, particularly since each part contains similar bowings. The oldest layer of additions appears to be some of the pencil markings, examples of which are visible on the first line of music (the dynamic markings). The set, which is complete, contains the following twenty-seven parts: VIOLINO PRIMO with tide page for chis part (numbered I. Pult. [=standi; I copy; first three movements marked with pencil dynamic markings and bowings in blue pencil); VIOLINO PRIMO without tide page (numbered 2, 3; 2 copies, first three movements marked with similar dynamic markings and bowings in blue); VIOLINO SECONDO with tide page (unnumbered; 1 copy, first three movements marked with pencil and blue notations for dynamics, slurs, bowings); VIOLINO SECONDO without title page (unnumbered; 2 copies; first three movements marked with pencil, blue, and red notations for dynamics, slurs, bowings, one parr has Solo indication at beginning of me second movement); VIOLA (unnumbered; 2 copies; one part has pencil markings for the first two movements; one copy has pencil and blue markings for the first two movements); VIOLONCELLO E BASSO (2 copies: one is unnumbered with hand-notation on cover in blue pencil: Symphonie No. …" @default.
