- W2739042841 abstract "EFFECTS OF ATMOSPHERIC CO 2 ON PHOTOSYNTHETICCHARACTERISTICS OF SOYBEAN LEAVESR. M. Wheeler, C. L. Mackowiak, J. C. Sager and W. M. Knott, TheBionetics Corp. (RMW, CLM) and NASA Biomedical Operations andResearch Office (JCS, WMK), Kennedy Space Center, FLABSTRACTSoybean (Glycine _ cv. McCall) plants were grown at 500, I000,and 2000 umol mol -± CO 2 f_r 39 days and a photosynthetic photonflux (PPF) of 300 umol m-_ s-_. Individual leaves were thenexposed to step changes of CO 2 concentration and PPF to study CO 2assimilation rates (CAR), i.e., leaf net photosynthesis. Ingeneral CAR increased when CO 2 increased f{om 500 to i000 umolmol -_, but not from i000 to 2000 umol mol -_. Regardless of theprevious CO 2 level, all leaves showed similar CAR at similar CO 2and PPF. This observation contrasts with reports that plantstend to become lazy at elevated CO 2 levels over time. Althoughleaf stomatal conductance (to water vapor) showed diurnal rhythmsentrained to the photoperiod, leaf CAR did not show these rhythmsand remained constant across the light period, indicating thatstomatal conductance had little effect on CAR. Such measurementssuggest that short-term changes in CO 2 exchange dynamics for aControlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) can be closelypredicted for an actively growing soybean crop.INTRODUCTIONSoybean (Glycine max L.) is among the candidate cropscurrently under study for use in a Controlled Ecological LifeSupport System (CELSS; I) and is tentatively scheduled fortesting in the Biomass Production Chamber (BPC) at Kennedy SpaceCenter in 1990. Preliminary tests with soybeans are currentlyunderway in growth chambers at Kennedy Space Center inpreparation for BPC studies. A major focus of these studies hasbeen the effects of elevated CO 2 on plant development and biomassproduction. During all of these tests, leaf gas exchange (i.e.photosynthesis and transpiration) measurements were taken fromplants grown under the different atmospheric CO 2 levels. Inaddition, the leaves were exposed to temporary changes in93" @default.
