- W2740168953 abstract "The interaction between activated platelets and monocytes results in the production of monocyte-platelet aggregates (MPAs), providing a pathway for monocyte adhesion and infiltration in the sub-endothelial space and initiates the release of pro-inflammatory mediators involved in atherosclerosis. Measurement of MPAs, rarely undertaken in previous studies, provides the most sensitive method to determine the activation of platelets in vivo, which are highly relevant to atherothrombotic events. Regular participation in exercise can lower cardiovascular risk, but little is known regarding the impact of exercise training on the platelet function or the presence of MPAs. Walking is a modality of exercise that allows sedentary individuals to meet current physical activity recommendations. We investigated the effect of a 6-month walking (W) intervention on the presence of circulating MPAs in apparently healthy older adults. Twenty-nine participants were randomised to 6 months of either no exercise (NE, n = 14) or 3 × 50 mins/wk of supervised centre-based W (n = 15) at 70% heart rate reserve. MPAs, assessed using flow cytometry, increased (p = 0.03) by 1.2 ± 3.6% from 0 M to 6 M in the NE group. In contrast, MPAs remained unchanged in the W group (p = 0.31). These data suggest that the adoption of W that meets current PA recommendations may inhibit the increases in MPAs over time in middle-aged and older sedentary individuals. This study provides the first evidence to suggest a novel mechanism by which regular participation in exercise may be anti-atherogenic, anti–inflammatory, and associated with lower incidence of cardiovascular events." @default.
