- W2740366906 abstract "This chapter discusses the diffusion and permeation of hydrogen through iron and steel. The fact that iron is permeable to hydrogen was reported when it was shown that a tube made of mild steel filled with hydrogen becomes empty when heated to high temperatures in air. The rate of hydrogen flow, if determined by the rate of diffusion, should be inversely proportional to the thickness of the metal wail. The deviation from the law of the inverse proportionality is because of the surface processes on both sides of the plate. If so, one could expect deviations for thinner plates rather than for thicker ones. When a gas is forced through a wall made of porous material, the rate of the gas passage is directly proportional to the difference of gas pressures, or to the difference in the number of gas molecules striking both the surfaces of the wall per time unit. Such a relation has also been found for the flow of different gases through hot glass and through organic polymers." @default.
