- W2740808727 abstract "The process of state-building and bureaucratisation of the French society, especially of the provincial urban society, in the 19th century brought about an increase in the number of office civil servants and the making of a professional group. Can this group be defined as a “social class”, and according to what definition of a social class? Urban civil servants, more numerous, shared social, economic or political interests or advantages (the prestige of the professional activity). They also began to constitute a class of its own: they shared the same administrative culture and they often shared a common sociability; they had a feeling of collective belonging (to the same group) and they sometimes, like a lot of status groups, tended to have a collective behaviour of social segregation from other citizens. In spite of the absence of a few criteria of the Marxist definition, civil servants, especially office civil servants in towns because they were more numerous and gathered together in the same location, began to constitute a social class of its own at the beginning of the 19th century." @default.
