- W2740977453 abstract "The continuing deterioration of the economys natural support systems eventually will overwhelm efforts to improve the human condition unless the desire to ensure a sustainable future becomes a key concern of national governments. A sustainable future means that a series of interlocking issues must be dealt with simultaneously. It will be difficult to stabilize population until poverty is reduced. It may not be possible to avoid a mass extinction of species as long as the 3rd world is burdened with debt. Further the resources needed to arrest the earths physical deterioration may not be available unless the international arms race can be reversed. Scientists political leaders and the general public are beginning to recognize that world population and energy trends are disrupting the earths natural systems and resources but the policy adjustments necessary to return the world to a sustainable economic path lag far behind. In many national capitals the commitment to action is negligible and political leaders remain preoccupied with day-to-day crises at the expense of longterm sustainability. The effort to protect the earths ozone layer signaled by the 24-nation protocol on chlorofluorocarbons signed in Montreal provides a welcome precedent for cooperative action on global threats. Analyses of individual sectors of the global economy reveal unsustainable patterns. Also clear are unsustainable trends in the energy sector. The immediate effects of population growth and land degradation essentially are local yet the climate alteration linked to fossil fuel combustion is global. Heavy capital investments and strong commitments on the part of political leaders are essential if the earths soil and trees are to be restored. The success of efforts to save topsoil and restore tree cover depend heavily on slowing of population growth. Those countries with populations expanding at 2-4%/year may find it almost impossible to restore tree cover protect their soils and take other action to achieve sustainable development. The provision of family planning services in response to unsatisfied demand often is the quickest and most cost-effective way countries can secure life-support systems. Fertility declines most rapidly when family planning services are provided in a society already enjoying broad-based economic and social gains. It now is time for national governments to design energy policies intended to reduce carbon emissions. In sum investments above and beyond current expenditures are necessary to stabilize topsoil restore tree cover put the brakes on population growth and foster development of energy efficiency and renewable power sources quickly enough to slow the global warning." @default.
