- W2741196912 abstract "The Sewol’s sinking may seem an unfortunate accident, the operation to save the passengers a heroic drama enacted in the seas, and the passengers’ death its tragic ending. The whole sequence that unfolded before the nation’s eyes makes nothing short of a tragedy. Once the surface is scratched, however, a more complicated picture emerges. The Sewol sank under the weight of the state that was entangled with the maritime industry’s self-serving interests. The rescue operation catastrophically failed thanks to an absentee state that relegated its responsibility to a private salvage firm. And yet when questions arose about the state’s responsibility, the state wielded its power to evade and deny its responsibility. A careful analysis of the picture, furthermore, reveals more troubling, and perhaps more deeply rooted, ills that inflict Korea. The entanglement between the state and the maritime industry is part of a larger totalitarian pattern the roots of which can be traced back at least to the 1960s. Decades of single-minded pursuit of the nation’s economic growth have addicted all organizations, from the state to businesses, to a profit-driven worldview that willingly sacrifices everything else. The nation, so preoccupied with rushed development, has grafted one socio-political risk on top of another without ever pausing to reflect critically upon them, much less address them. Korea’s compressed modernization has instead kept these risks under pressure. The Sewol disaster is a symptom and warning of the compounded risks." @default.
