- W2741832722 abstract "Inaresidential research wardcoffee drinking wasstudied in9 volunteer humansubjects with histories ofheavycoffee drinking. A series offive experiments wasundertaken tocharacterize adlibitum coffee consumption andtoinvestigate theeffects ofmanipulating coffee concentration, caffeine dosepercup, andcaffeine preloads prior tocoffee drinking. Manipulations weredouble-blind and scheduled inrandomized sequences across days. Whencupsofcoffee werefreely available, coffee drinking tended toberather regularly spaced during thedaywithintercup intervals becoming progressively longer throughout theday;experimental manipulations showedthatthis lengthening of intercup intervals wasnotduetoaccumulating caffeine levels. Numberofcupsofcoffee consumed wasaninverted U-shaped function ofbothcoffee concentration andcaffeine dosepercup;however, coffee-concentration anddose-per-cup manipulations didnotproduce similar effects onother measures ofcoffee drinking (intercup interval, timetodrink acup,within-day distribution ofcups). Caffeine preload produced dose-related decreases innumber ofcupsconsumed. Asawhole, these experiments provide somelimited evidence forboththesuppressive andthereinforcing effects ofcaffeine oncoffee consumption. Examination oftotal daily coffee andcaffeine intake across experiments, however, provides noevidence forprecise regulation (i.e., titration) ofcoffee orcaffeine intake. Keyuords: coffee, caffeine, drugself-administration, tremor, subjective effects, coffee drinking, humans" @default.
