- W2741834491 abstract "The school superintendent, as the leader of a school system, has the responsibility of establishing a vision of the school district. Included in this vision must be the integration of technology into every aspect of a district's operation. Not only is this integration essential for enhancing a teacher's effectiveness, but students entering the world of the twenty-first century need to be technologically literate to function to their fullest capacity. This study had as its focus, the school superintendent's knowledge, perception of future usage, and decision-making strategies for incorporating computers and interactive television into their school systems. The research looked at three basic research questions: (a) What is the present knowledge level and knowledge of potential uses for these two technologies, (b) How do superintendents perceive the present technology usage and need to incorporate these technologies, (c) How do superintendents presently address the acquisition and implementation of these technologies vis-a-vis decision-making.Data were gathered by means of a survey instrument which was sent to all superintendents in the Northeast Ohio area. This population consists of ninety-four superintendents. The fifty-three question survey examined the superintendents in relation to the three research questions. The findings of this instrument were compared to the current literature regarding these technologies as well as the literature of futurists who have examined the future direction schools should be taking with these technologies. The findings showed conclusively that there is a large discrepancy in the knowledge level of superintendents in regards to these two technologies. Superintendents clearly use professional journals to help keep themselves updated on technology. Workshops and college classes are rarely utilized by superintendents. Superintendents are far more familiar with computers and their potentialities than with interactive television. The lack of interactive television knowledge would hinder a superintendent's ability to make quality decisions about this technology. Superintendents also reach technology decisions with little underlying structure in the decision-making process. Few districts have policies and procedures for the acquisition, usage and evaluation of these technologies. Few districts have technology committees in operation to help facilitate the technological enhancement and coordination within a district. The study concluded with the development of ten recommendations for superintendents to help them in the technology integration process. These recommendations allow superintendents to clearly focus their efforts toward further technology development in their school systems." @default.
