- W2742062008 abstract "Mithal et al. evaluates prostate-specific antigen, pathological stage and Gleason score as prognostic factors of prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy by retrospective analysis of 2735 patients.1 Data were collected in the Sheared Equal Access Regional Cancer Hospital database. These factors are usually assessed in general clinical settings, and are the simple tools to evaluate the prostate cancer. Many studies have been carried out and published on this issue, and these factors are known to have a great impact on the treatment outcome of prostate cancer. Some authors have previously established a postoperative prediction nomogram using these factors.2-4 However, there are not so many reports that evaluate prostate cancer-specific mortality or survival as the end-point of the study.5, 6 This could reflect the long history of prostate cancer, especially after radical prostatectomy. In the present article, the authors evaluate these prognostic factors according to different end-points, such as biochemical recurrence, castration-resistant prostate cancer, metastases and prostate cancer-specific mortality.1 The authors insist that these factors tend to predict later events better than early events during the follow up.1 Among three major parameters of prostate cancer – prostate-specific antigen, pathological stage and Gleason score – the authors insist on the greater importance of Gleason score as a predictor of outcome after radical prostatectomy, especially for prostate cancer-specific mortality. The biggest problem of the present study is that the salvage treatment was not planned, reflecting that this was a retrospective study. The means of salvage treatment and/or the timing of salvage treatment could have a great impact on the prognosis of a patient. Further investigation and analysis of the cohort with planned salvage treatment protocols are awaited. None declared." @default.
