- W2743307712 abstract "This chapter discusses visual refractive characteristics and the subhuman primate. The subhuman primate has visual characteristics that are very similar to those of the human primate. These basic similarities make the subhuman primate an ideal substitute for the human primate in studies designed to determine the effects of heredity and environment on the development of visual refractive characteristics. As the subhuman primate's behavior and environmental exposure can be controlled much more accurately than can the human primate's environmental conditions, it is possible to utilize an experimental approach in which different environmental conditions are provided for groups with randomly selected hereditary characteristics. Thus, all individuals in a particular group are exposed to virtually the same environmental conditions, whereas individuals in a different group are exposed to different environmental conditions but the same for all individuals in the particular group. This approach enables one to literally control heredity through a randomization procedure while systematically varying the environment. Thus, it is possible to utilize one of the most efficient and effective techniques for studying the relationships between environment and heredity. The studies utilizing subhuman primates to determine the effects of heredity and environment on visual refractive characteristics show quite clearly that the environment plays a major role in the development of emmetropia and myopia in subhuman primates. Because of the essential similarity of the visual characteristics of the human and subhuman primates, one may generalize that the environment also plays a major role in the development of emmetropia and myopia among human primates." @default.
