- W2743871651 abstract "This thesis proposes the design of a new instrument for greatly improved diagnosis and treatment of a variety of common retinal disorders. Of specific interest is the quantitative diagnosis and precise laser treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) appearing in a variety of conditions affecting as many as 2-3 million people in the United States alone.Laser surgery is the most effective known procedure for treating the above conditions. However, the current rate of success of this procedure is less than 50% for eradication of the CNV following one treatment session. Each failure requires retreatment. Each retreatment in turn has a 50% failure rate. The proposed instrument is designed to reduce this failure rate. It consists of a computerized multi-spectral fundus camera with an associated head-up display and a laser tracking system. Computerized multi-spectral imaging provides simultaneous active visualization of choroidal and retinal circulations, giving an accurate determination of affected areas of the vasculature. The use of a number of computer-assisted functions eliminates much of the human error associated with laser eye surgery, and makes the procedure quantitative.Image-processing algorithms have been developed to display multi-spectral data in a useful manner, to assemble a wide-area map of the retina from partial views at various positions and magnification, to determine the location of an incoming image on the computer map in real time, and to ensure that the laser beam only cauterizes the afflicted area during surgery. These algorithms have broad applicability. A major challenge in the design of these algorithms is the conflicting need for accuracy, speed, and robustness to image variations and imaging noise. The variability of live fundus images is particularly high, due to the difficulties in providing steady illumination. Perhaps the single most important contribution of this work is the development of effective and enabling image processing algorithms for the proposed instrument that meet the extreme conflicting constraints discussed above.Experimental results demonstrating these algorithms on real clinical data are presented." @default.
