Thestructure of the tribal economy is generally based on forests, agricultureand sea. Cash is a scarce commodity and quite often tribal do not havecash even for requirements like purchase of food grains or other essentialcommodities. The majority of tribal people have small land holding andhence their cropping pattern is very limited. The literacy rate amongScheduled Tribes is only 59.0 per cent compared to 74.04 per cent for thecountry as a whole (2011census). The medical and health related facilitiesare very rarely available to the people in tribal area.The present study entitled “Socio-Economic Study of TribalHouseholds in Palghar District (M.S.)” was undertaken with specificobjectives such as, to study the socio-economic characteristics, to assessincome, expenditure and employment pattern, to study consumptionpattern of tribal households, to documents the problems of tribal withrespects to education, credit, food, communication, health, etc.For this study, Palghar district was selected purposively becausefrom Konkan region this district is having maximum tribal population.Four tahsils viz., Mokada, Vikramgad, Jawhar and Talasari and from eachtehsils three villages having high proportion of tribal population wasselected purposively. From the each village ten households were selectedrandomly, thus final sample was consists of 120 households.From this study, found that the overall average age of the head ofhouseholds was 39.30 years. The overall education score was 4.88 andoverall literacy rate was 72.50 per cent. The average size of family was705.28 and in terms of adult units 4.94. Regarding occupation of tribalhouseholds, 54.17 per cent were having farming, 14.16 per cent werehaving service, 11.67 per cent households were having agricultural labourand 20.00 per cent having business as a mean occupation. The averagesize of land holding was 1.80 hectares. The overall average cultivated areawas 0.864 ha. The overall percentage of cultivated area was 0.864 ha.(73.22 %). Paddy was the main kharif crop.Total family income worked out to `75,067. The farm businessincome was accounted to 32.19 per cent of the total family income. Theoverall per capita income was `14,217 and per adult income was ` 15,196.Per family total consumption expenditure was worked out to`74621. The trend was found to be increasing with increase in the size ofholding. At overall level, the average annual expenditure per adult unitworked to `15,105. The proportion of expenditure on food to the totalconsumption expenditure was 60.13 per cent. Annually per adult incomesurplus was only `90.28.At overall level, the average annual employment per worker perannum worked out to 256.88 days for male and 207.83 days form female.Of the total employment of male, 156.04 days employment was on farmand remaining 100.83 days was non-farm employment. This trend wassimilar in case of female which was 122.19 days on farm and 85.63 dayson non-farm employment.Total cereal consumption varied from 2.891 kg in landless class to4.524 kg in large size class of tribal households and overall was 2.538 kg.At overall average intake of calories was 2263 kcal it was less thanrecommended 2688 Kcal.The overall average intake of protein 54.2 gms. itwas less than recommended which is 55 gms. Overall average intake of fat31.04 gms. it was more than recommended which is 30 gms.The study concluded that the tribals had poor quality land andeducational status was also poor. Almost all the tribal farmers (61.67 %)were facing the constraints of lack of irrigation facilities. Less than 50 percent tribals did not have knowledge of use of improved seeds andfertilizers etc. One half landless tribals had expressed that they have notenough income to educate their children. The constraints of nonavailabilityof employment throughout the year were mostly faced bylandless class (90.90 %). At overall level, the surplus in the family incomein relation to expenditure was ` 44 and per adult income surplus was `90.28." @default.
