- W2747899769 abstract "Between 1982 and 1986 the Mexico Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) analyzed data on children and adults living in 6 rural villages in Temascalcingo township at the southern end of the Solis Valley in the State of Mexico to examine relationships between dietary intake and the subjects performance in growth psychological development immune function (morbidity) reproductive competence and social competence. Monotonous diets predominated. Severe malnutrition was rare and when it did occur it occurred secondarily to disease. Yet children did not have stunted growth primarily during the first 2 years of life. Growth stunting accelerated around 3 months when babies depend on nutrients stored during fetal development and from breast milk. Birth size and mothers body mass at conception were significant predictors of size at 8 months. Mothers body also significantly predicted birth size. Early growth stunting also led to considerable deficits in functional performance. By 6 months smaller infants were less adapt at mental and motor activities than larger infants. They were also less happy less interactive and more withdrawn. These deficits continued through their school-age years. These findings suggested the importance of interventions beginning before birth and conception and the intergenerational effects of growth-stunting. Poor dietary quality rather than energy or protein deficiency was the primary nutritional problem. A poor dietary quality consisted mainly of tortillas beans and pasta while a better quality diet had more animal products fruits and vegetables than the poor quality diet. Children who ate the better quality diet as well as children of mothers who ate such a diet performed better than those associated with the poor quality diet. The high phytase and fiber content of the maize=based diets was responsible for the mineral deficiencies in all age groups. These results indicated considerable need to introduce interventions in marginally malnourished populations." @default.
