Seen but not Heard at the V&A Museum of Childhood (London, UK) showcases Rachel Molina's photos of children on the journey from being the most senior in primary school to becoming the youngest in a new school. The challenge of not knowing where friends will end up, and of the unknown—which in many cases, will not have been experienced since the first day of primary school—is one that Molina observed first hand as her son made the transition. “I believe it's the biggest educational change most kids, in this country, have in their life and I was keen to explore how this universal experience affects them”, she said. The portraits depict 31 children making this exciting yet frightening change. Of course, the aim of this transition is to learn—not just academically but also about themselves and how they will deal with situations thrown at them and the consequences of their actions. Molina has managed to capture this moment of transformation and the range of emotions experienced—some are nervous about starting a new school, some are scared of bullying and new teachers, some are excited about the new curricula, and yet others are completely unfazed by the changes they are about to face. These intimate portraits bring the viewer back in time to their own transition at this pivotal life moment. The need to get to know a new group of people. The challenges of the new subjects that need to be learned and the level of knowledge needed to do well in exams that will shape future success. And, perhaps most importantly, the development of self-awareness and exploration of one's identity throughout adolescence and young adulthood.
