- W2750063721 abstract "In the era of globalization, mass media is growing very rapidly. Hence, almost all aspects in life are affected by its development. It does not only have animpact on technology and electronics implications, but also on the communicationby means of language. Therefore, the various appearances of language begin toappear. For example, blending as one of word formations that is often used indaily life offers a unique creativity, innovative way, and unusual character with itsplayful language. It is widely used in English advertising, product naming, promotion, and also daily conversation. From that identification, there are tworesearch questions; 1) What types of English blending words are found in massmedia? 2) How are English blending words in mass media constructed? The grand theory used in this study is Ingo’s blending type and rule(2002). There are two blending types: improper and proper blending, while theconstruction comes into two conventional patterns. The pattern of blending is AB+ CD = AD, but there is an exception, where the blending has structure ACinstead of AD, and it is only 4 or 6% of all blending. In general, blending thatdoes not correspond to the structure AD are in a clear minority. For this study, the researcher took a descriptive qualitative method usingdocumentation study and book survey. The whole data which had been obtainedare 150 data of English blending words, then the researcher took only 30% (45words) data purposively as the sample of study. The data are taken from electronicand printed mass media. The result showed that in reaction to the type of blending, there are 28improper blending, 9 proper blending, and 8 English blending words whichcannot be categorized as improper nor proper blending because they havedifferent form of second element modifying first element. Seen from wordconstruction, it was found that there are 33 English blending words using rule AD,8 words using rule AC, 2 words using rule ACE, 1 word using rule BE, and 1word using rule ADG. In relation to the construction of 28 improper blendingwords, there are 18 words using rule AD, 7 words using rule AC, 1 word usingrule ACE, 1 word using rule ADG, and 1 word using rule BE. From 9 properblending, it was known that their construction consisted of 7 words using rule AD,1 word using rule AC, and 1 word using rule ACE. Meanwhile, for thoseuncategorized ones, all of their constructions using rule AD in total amount of 8words.ivIn conclusion, there are several minority number of words which do notuse the conventional rule of blending and are not categorized into two commontypes of blending. They are called minority words as pursuant to blending type, there are 8 of 45 English blending words which are not part of improper andproper blending. Besides, they are also minority since seen from the differentconstruction of blending words, there are 4 words constructed in irregular patternconsisting of 2 words using rule ACE, 1 word using rule BE, and 1 word usingrule ADG.v" @default.
