In Cameroon, they are nearly 50.5% of the estimated population of 19,406,100 inhabitants, according to the 2005 third General Population and Housing Census results published in 2010. Despite their superiority in number, women’s participation in the society continues to be a cause for concern because of persistent gender inequalities in social and professional life. In Cameroon in particular, efforts by the government have led to significant actions for the empowerment and leadership of women (National Gender Policy Document 2011-2020). These actions contributed a lot to improve the living conditions of women through the adoption of a National Gender Policy (unfortunately not always respected in practice), but not on factors related to their status. In fact, in Cameroon, traditional division of labour confines women to household activities while men are engaged in public life. A woman invests most of her time in household activities, which significantly reduce her participation in other activities (social, political, economic activities) which become the preserve of men. Furthermore, Cameroonian mentalities promote the fact that men should earn money for the family and limit the work of women, when they have a work, to minimum wage thus low wage work in informal and rural sectors. This traditional way of thinking still exists despite many tentative actions by the populations all over the world and in Cameroon to abolish such thinking. However, more and more women have started entering sectors that were once reserved exclusively for men such as territorial command as well as international and regions bodies. But, still the number of women leaders remains insignificant despite the commitment of the Cameroonian Head of state, H.E.Mr. Paul Biya « to make equality between men and women a reality and to make sure that women are well represented in all governing bodies of Cameroon … »; women continue to be under-represented in decision-making and leadership positions in several sectors. However, after an analysis of the few women leaders’ work in their respective positions in Cameroon, we can observe that their ministerial departments or administrations are well managed, without corruption and embezzlement. The management by women should be promoted for a better administration and development of Cameroon so as to become an emergent country by the year 2035 as described in Cameroon’s national vision." @default.
