- W2751074507 abstract "This chapter explores how Pakistani youth make sense of themselves in relation to the social world and the ways their identifications intersect with nation, religion, gender and ethnicity. Youth navigate their identities in a socio-political context of a Muslim majority state, which traces its genesis to a religious identity. A total of 65 youth, 28 women and 37 men, participated in 13 single-sex focus group discussions. The youth express an explicit sense of national identity imagined through (Sunni) Islam, which overlays a homogenous unity on internal diversity. Nevertheless, aspirations to compliance with ‘proper’ Islam co-exist alongside commitments to secular democracy and equal citizenship rights. The discursive construction of multiple antagonistic non-Muslim ‘others’ tends to solidify Islam as a boundary between ‘us’ and ‘them’. This fractures the nation through the construction of internal ‘others’—non-Muslim Pakistanis and ‘improper’ Muslims who deviate from hegemonic ways of enacting Muslim identities. The confluence of religious, national and ethnic identifications within a conflict-affected context produces strong gendered subjectivities. This fosters the accumulation of highly militarised masculinities in defence of the nation, Islam and women, and positions women as symbolic border-guards between ‘us’ and ‘them’ and carriers of national/religious traditions. While youth discourses indicate local and global influences on the dynamics of national and religious identifications, gender positions and relations appear to be largely stable, essentialised and naturalised." @default.
