- W275185192 abstract "The specters that haunt modern colleges and universities are many. The malevolent spirits at work within the collegiate sphere, are often, no doubt, adumbrations of larger contempo rary social ills. Modern man, possessed by the spirits of both freedom and authority, has been forced to bear arms against all that threatens either his liberty or his power. But then, after the battles are won, either freedom itself becomes feared, or author ity races towards tyranny.' This quandary of modern man has in recent years found its battleground in the arena. It is revealing that so many battles on college campuses are couched in a power-freedom motif, for it suggests, first, that the perception of organizational structures, i.e., power structures, has become central within the educational process. This implies that how education operates is central to the na ture of learning, and what is taught and the scholarly ability of the professor are overshadowed. A second theme that becomes apparent in the present struggle is freedom. As this term is often used, it re flects a battle within the power structure, faculty versus administrators versus students. Since freedom is interpreted once again in terms of an organizational threat, the adjective academic seems to* be out of place. When it is the freedom of the person opposed to the organization that is under discussion the term academic becomes void of any scholarly connotation. The campus battles are not specifically concerned with erudition. The ease with which contemporary social battles are transferred from one sphere to another (student-administra tion, laborer-employer, black-white) points to the nature of the college revolt. One must first understand the nature of the college before one can enter the debate concerning the place of institutions" @default.
