- W275264292 abstract "The conventional approach to surface structure determination by analysis of LEED consists of comparison between experimental intensities and intensities calculated on the basis of a model of the diffraction process and a trial model of the surface structure. Although this model calculation approach has been used with some success in the case of simple structures, it is unlikely that it can be easily extended to more complex systems unless a reasonable approximation to the structure is known or can be determined by another method. In this article, therefore, we consider the possible adaption and application to LEED of the methods of x-ray crystallography in which direct use is made of the experimental data without prior assumption of a model structure. Since these methods are based upon single-scattering theory, difficulties can be anticipated to arise from the known importance of multiple-scattering processes in LEED. In practice, however, more severe difficulties result from the paucity of data available from a LEED as opposed to an x-ray diffraction experiment, and from other characteristics of the scattering of low-energy electrons in solids. A method for solution of some of these problems is described and applications to experimental data analysis are presented. The results suggest that direct methods of analysis of LEED may indeed provide a means for obtaining a good approximation to surface structures." @default.
