To establish direct causal and functional associations between genotype and phenotype, it is hence indispensable to observe intermediate molecular levels, such as transcript, protein and metabolite abundance. Here we focus on the impact and advantage of using metabolomics to identify and interpret genotype-phenotype associations in model organisms. We conclude with large-scale exploratory studies that systematically chart association networks between genes and metabolites in mutant libraries. Beyond the well-known metabolic network, such unbiased gene-metabolite association maps provide a new key to interpret genomic variance in metabolome and to predict genetic causes underlying complex phenotypes." @default.
