- W2754054985 abstract "Effective contraception enables women with diabetes to prepare for future pregnancies. The most effective reversible methods – implants and IUDs – can be safely used by virtually all diabetic women and can be initiated immediately postpartum without affecting a woman's ability to breastfeed. Injections have slightly higher failure rates in typical use, and may affect glucose tolerance or make it more challenging for women to lose weight postpartum. Progestin-only pills can also be started postpartum and act as a bridge method. Initiation of estrogen-containing methods (pills, patches, and vaginal rings) should be delayed for 3–6 weeks postpartum to avoid hypercoagulation, but have no adverse metabolic sequelae and can be used by women without serious comorbidities or diabetic complications. Barrier and behavioral methods are available, but are not as strongly endorsed because of their relatively high failure rates. Every woman should be aware of emergency contraception." @default.
