- W2754090216 abstract "A family of autocrine growth factors with homology to a Micrococcus luteus secreted protein essential for growth have been dubbed resuscitation-promoting factors (RpfA-E). Though Rpfs may resuscitate mycobacteria under certain conditions, the trigger for their expression and effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis residing in caseating granulomas remains to be determined. Bacilli rendered dormant in vitro and latent tuberculosis (TB) in vivo are similarly refractory to chemotherapy, suggesting that bacterial dormancy may contribute to the extended course of antibiotics necessary to treat TB. Technical advances, scientific curiosity and the huge public health need have all fueled a surge of interest in TB latency, and a model has emerged in which host-induced stress and dormant bacteria play prominent roles. From a clinical and public health standpoint, the principal importance of latent TB infection is the ability of the disease to reactivate. Reactivation from clinically asymptomatic infection has been documented by epidemiological and molecular methods." @default.
