- W275421613 abstract "In this chapter, we outline some theoretical schemes that attempt to summarize collective information on proteomes contained in a two-dimensional (2-D) gel, usually presented as a list of x, y coordinates of protein spots and their abundances. Visually, the information of a 2-D gel can be presented as a “bubble” diagram (Fig. 1) in which spots are shown as circles with the radius of the circle indicating the relative abundance. (In drawing the “bubble” diagram, we have included only the 20 proteins of Table 1 which are the spots having the greatest abundance in the data taken from ref. 1.) One can view a bubble diagram of a proteomics map as graphical output from an experimental laboratory. From the theoretical point of view, a bubble diagram (or the corresponding tables of x, y, z coordinates) represents input information on a map for theoretical considerations. What we would like to see as an output of theoretical studies of proteomics maps is a list of properties of the map as a whole, which are technically referred to as map invariants or map descriptors An invariant in mathematics is a quantity that is independent of labels (such as numbers assigned to individual spots) used to record data." @default.
