- W275486852 abstract "Mining operation produces a significant environmental risk. It relates mainly to two factors: Subsidence of upper layers over the exploited seam. Such subsidence may disturb the hydro-geological system in the soil and result in formation of fens and change the natural ecosystem. Storing of mineral wastes, including salty waters, on the surface. The mineral waste deposit is a source of contamination of ground waters by various salts and other chemicals damaging the normal ecosystem. In this paper the second problem is considered, particularly the use of the georadar method for assessment contamination distributions in vicinity of mining waste deposits. Georadar measurements carried out for assessment the changes in mineralization of waters polluted by mining wastes require introduction of new techniques of data interpretation. The paper demonstrates such a technique on an example of interpretation of results of investigation in the area of mining waste deposit Bukow. The classical interpretation of measurement data did not yield good results owing to two reasons. The area was built of clays and silts that signifi cantly attenuated radar waves. In addition, the structure of aqueous layers caused generation of interference waves that rendered impossible of using the amplitude to determine the parameters describing mineralization of aqueous layers. In such a situation we decided to employ the properties of georadar waves on the reflecting border. The reflected waves under the conditions present in the investigated area must have changed the phase, while no phase change takes place in the refraction waves. After finding the critical angle at which the refractory wave is generated, the wave velocity in the water-containing zone can be calculated, and comparing the differences in wave velocities along the profile the change in mineralization of ground waters could be assessed." @default.
