- W2755171567 abstract "The ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to influence phagosome maturation and subvert this compartment to its own needs is clearly central to the success of this bug as a pathogen. The influence of the bacterium extends beyond the immediate confines of the phagosome through the use of released effectors, predominantly lipids and lipoproteins, that regulate the macrophage's antigen presentation capacity and its ability to respond to activating stimuli. In contrast, macrophages activated with IFN-γ prior to infection with Mycobacterium are capable of overcoming the bacterium's ability to arrest phagosome maturation and instead deliver the bacterium to an acidified compartment rich in lysosomal hydrolases. The Mycobacterium-containing phagosome behaves like an early endosome exhibiting homotypic fusion with endosomal vesicles, and could therefore intersect with the antigen sampling and presenting machinery of its host cell. Mycobacterium is enclosed in the macrophage phagosome for the majority of its life cycle in is definitive host." @default.
