- W2755961628 abstract "Introduction: During the past few years, the importance of the insufficient knowledge of parents about vaccines, which can reduce the adequate response and turnout of children for vaccination has been more and more emphasized. Materials and methods: The study comprised 200 parents who visited one of the five Public Health Services (randomly chosen), during the period 01-15. 02. 2007. The semi structured questionnaire on parent’s knowledge and attitudes about vaccination was filled in by them. Statistical analysis included χ2 test and correlation analysis. Results: Children of most of the investigated parents 184 (92%) received all vaccines compulsory for their age. The most frequent reasons of under immunization were an acute sickness of the child (44%), not conscientious parents (31%) and parent’s fear of side effects (25%). Statistically significant correlation was observed between high education level and regular response to vaccination of their children (ρ=0.481; p=0.001 for mothers and ρ=0.238; p=0.017 for fathers). One hundred and sixty eight (84.0%) parents thought that vaccines have positive health effects, 20 (10%) that vac cines do not have any effects, and 12 (6%) that vaccines have negative health effects. Statistically significant correlation was registered among parents who have more than one child and the positive attitude about vaccination (ρ=0.278; p=0.005). Most of the parents (69.5%) got information about immunization from pediatricians, 37 (18.5%) from scientific literature and 20 (10. 0%) from mass media. Parents with high level of education frequently vaccinated their children against diseases which are not included in obligatory immunization schedule (χ2 test=0.520, p=0.002). Conclusion: In the population of Belgrade there is a high level of knowledge and a positive attitude of parents toward the immunization of their children, resulting in regular vaccination." @default.
