• W2756556417 abstract "This chapter argues that there is a reciprocal relationship between the socio-economic circumstances of migrant-sending communities, the imperative to migrate, and the practice of remitting. Increased household vulnerability and risk, such as the availability of work in the immediate vicinity, lack of income, limited non-agricultural opportunities, and natural disasters, threaten the livelihoods of family members and enhance the appeal of migration with its prospects of generating remittances. The chapter confirms that families are pivotal in deciding which family members engage in all matters relating to migration, from deciding to leave the village, when to leave, and where to go. While the specific reasons for migrating vary between households, they have in common the shared belief that migration promises to minimize risk and vulnerability and increase the household’s income. The households interviewed as part of the research for this book contributed to planning and providing necessary resources to migrate, including providing funds for the migration, established contact and used their social networks to arrange accommodation and find employment in the destinations. In return, families received direct benefit from the migration through remittances. In this context, migrant remittances are the quid-pro-quo for family support." @default.
