- W275691984 abstract "Macintosh in High Schools In 1984, when the Mac was first introduced, industry pundits questioned for whom it was developed. Its memory (then 128K) and power were, at the time, considered insufficient for business users, and there was little software available. Others recognized early on that its simplicity made it ideally suited to education, and even to relatively young computer users. In fact, it was rumored that one member of the original Mac development team wanted to make the machine easy enough for his 13-year-old brother to use. Four years later, a new Macintosh buying trend brings that early report back to mind. Firmly established in the business arena and in higher education, the Macintosh is now being bought in growing numbers by high schools. An Apple Computer concern, that the Mac might compete directly with the Apple II line, has been minimized by the fact that the trend for now appears to be focused on Grades 9-12. And while the Macintosh has been a pricey choice for educators in the past, schools can now buy into what many consider to be the Apple hardware platform of the future for less than the cost of an Apple IIGS. Our field salespeople have been selling Macintoshes into high schools for a couple of years, says Anne Patterson, Apple's manager of education market segment programs. There seems to be a lot more interest at this level, now that there are some models for how to integrate Macintoshes into the high school curriculum. It's spreading like wildfire. Among high schools that use Macs, enthusiasm runs rampant. As in business settings, ease of use is frequently cited as the number one reason for its purchase. a Macintosh, the computer falls into the background faster. Kids spend more time learning the curriculum and less time learning the computer, says Richard Wanderman, special educational consultant in Litchfield, Conn. Distinct Advantages The graphic interface, consistent across all software, is generally credited with making the Macintosh easy to use. Users simply point and click on an icon or picture that identifies a function, without having to know abstruse DOS commands. Children begin as visual learners long before they can decipher the symbolic code of oral language and written words. As a result, the Macintosh graphic interface is an intuitive and much easier way for children to make program choices. Pull-down menus and windows that allow for simultaneous displays of information simplify use even more. Another very important advantage of using the Macintosh is the simplicity of its AppleTalk network. With some laser printers still costing more than $4,000, high schools need a cheap and easy way to connect more than one computer to a laser printer. Because the AppleTalk controller is built into the Macintosh, installation requires an investment of only about $50 per computer and the ability to plug in a simple cable. Once the system is installed, students and teachers can also experiment with some potentially more interesting uses than simple peripheral sharing, such as electronic mail and file exchange. While AppleTalk is not a highperformance network in terms of speed, it is unsurpassed in ease of use and economy. In every aspect of educational computing, software determines how effectively the hardware is used. Not surprisingly, given Apple's previously exclusive focus on the college and business markets, productivity tools for the Macintosh abound. As a result, most Macs in high schools currently utilize word processing, desktop publishing, database and spreadsheet software to teach writing or business education. Writing The Macintosh is an ideal computer for writing instruction. Exceptional software is available, from pre-writing activities all the way through desktop publishing. Increasingly, writing programs combine a variety of functions (e. …" @default.
