- W2757018603 abstract "The lumped parameter approach to modelling a vehicle suspension is introduced. Modelling of the suspension starts with a single-degree-of-freedom system. Despite its simplicity, a great deal can be deduced regarding suspension optimisation from it. Initially, a swept sine analysis of constant amplitude is used. This is then extended to deal with real road profiles including pothole style excursions. Consideration is given to low- and high-speed damping values and a case made for choosing the transition point between them. The model is then extended to a two-degree-of-freedom system, allowing the body and hub modes to be simulated. The system is analysed with harmonic and pothole inputs. The four-degree-of-freedom system is then analysed including a treatment of roll transients and the use of cost functions to perform multi-parameter optimisations. The use of seven degree of freedom and systems with larger numbers of degrees of freedom is then considered. An ideal suspension allowing independent control of all modes is described. The limitations of the analysis provided are then discussed. The optimisation of suspensions is a vast topic and contains subjective analysis; there is a limit on how much can be covered in a textbook. The use of four-post test rigs is the presented. The determination of parameters is explained and the use of a rig in general explained. The functioning of a damper and an inerter are explained." @default.
