- W275788887 abstract "There is growing concern about inequality in access to health services among various groups of people-by geographical location, between rural and urban areas, between old and young, and by gender. Among those who may be overlooked and who may be vulnerable to poorer health are families of female heads of households, and recent evidence indicates that the number of Third World households managed by women is increasing. prevalence of these families varies from 10 percent in Nepal and Kuwait to over 40 percent in Panama and Botswana, with an average of about 33 percent.' In Sri Lanka, the setting for this research, households headed by women constitute 18 percent of all families. Our research focused on differences in factors associated with use and evaluation of health services in male- and female-headed households in villages in rural Sri Lanka. A number of dimensions that may influence health and subsequent use of services differentiate households headed by men and women. Comparison of Male- and Female-headed Households The head of the household is generally the person who is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the household.2 Households headed and managed by women irrespective of marital status are considered as female-headed households and may include widows, the divorced, the separated, and also wives living with children and perhaps other family members when their husbands are away much of the time. In rural areas, households run by women most often result from the death of the husband or from his temporary or permanent migration.3 Households managed by women are more vulnerable to poverty than those headed by men. These women retain primary responsibility for" @default.
