- W275886095 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of rapid effects of red light on hormone levels. A number of rapid effects of irradiation with red light on endogenous hormone levels have been reported in recent years. The chapter discusses gibberellin effects, cytokinin effects, and presents experimental studies regarding these effects. The effect of red light can be simulated by application of exogenous gibberellins and cytokinins in seed and spore germination, in leaf expansion, internode extension, two-dimensional growth in moss protonemata, and flowering. Rapid effects on endogenous cytokinin levels, paralleling these effects on gibberellin levels, have been reported for several systems in recent years. As with the gibberellin changes in barley and wheat leaves, the levels of extractable cytokinins rapidly decline during a further period of darkness after exposure to red light. Rapid effects of red light on cytokinin levels have also been observed in green leaves of poplar (Populus robusta). The effects of red light on levels of other types of endogenous hormones are less striking and less rapid. Exposure to red light leads to a reduction in the output of endogenous ethylene after 6 hours and to an increase in CO2 output after 2 hours. Thus, these phytochrome-controlled effects are much less rapid than is the case for the effects on gibberellin and cytokinin levels." @default.
