- W2759013090 abstract "Students experience predictable developmental stages during the college years, particularly traditional-aged students (Chickering & Reisser, 1993). While some students fit into developmental stages of social and academic involvement (Astin, 1993), engagement (Kuh, Kinzie, Buckley, Bridges, & Hayek, 2007), and/or integration (Tinto, 1993) there are other challenges these students face. One such developmental challenge is identity integration. Related to identity integration, Pattengale and Schreiner (2000) discussed four salient developmental issues for college sophomores: identity, motivation, personal responsibility regarding life choices, and academic major and career ambiguity. College sophomores confront these challenges at a time when decreased institutional attention, from the first to second year, makes these matters more pronounced. One of the most pressing issues noted above resides in the realm of career development and decision-making. Students must reconcile multiple factors and variables in order to make an academic major decision related to a career selection. Career development in college presents a three-fold challenge for counselors. First, college counselor training programs typically offer only one course on career theory. This single career course is mandated by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2009) yet this seems inadequate training to cover the complexities of working with career-mental health-developmental issues, especially when considering additional variables such as gender, minority needs, etc. (Betz, 2005). Second, some sophomores do not want to think about career development, do not know they need to be thinking about it, or they have foreclosed on further exploration due to ignorance, apathy, or resignation (Mareia, 1966). Third, many adults secure employment (and establish careers) without the benefit of career counseling at an institute of higher education. These issues may lead to a lack of understanding or over simplification of both career planning and career counseling, by both students and untrained counselors. Students may not appreciate the knowledge, skills and values trained vocational counselors have mastered, while untrained counselors may default on their own employment experiences and advise students based on their personal experience rather than counsel them to explore and consider options using formal assessment tools and procedures. These three factors combine to obfuscate the career planning process for college students and can cause confusion, anxiety, and avoidance. College sophomores highlight the career development component of identity integration due to the relatively limited attention they receive (Graunke & Woosley, 2005; Schaller, 2007). These sophos (i.e., Greek for wise), yet moros (i.e., Greek for foolish), students tend to get lost in the collegiate shuffle at a time when they are most vulnerable. Consider the other three student classes. Freshmen are on their way in, just starting and forced to take general courses that may or may not pertain to a chosen major. Seniors are on their way to graduation, they have identified a major and are completing their degrees. Juniors are over the halfway hump, have campus and college life down, have typically identified a major, and are so established in their programs that to change majors would significantly extend their time in school. Now consider sophomores. They are no longer seen as the incoming priority freshmen students, yet they are still new enough to be actively seeking a major, intimidated by second-level sophomore courses, floundering for their social strata, and struggling with their identity integration issues. Tinto (1993) supports the notion that sophomores face issues that are distinct from those faced in the first year of college. One of these distinct issues revolves around settling on/resolving one's academic major and subsequent career. …" @default.
