- W2760605876 abstract "There have been complaints by private sectors about the quality of local graduates as an “employable asset” – or the lack of soft skills – which for private sectors are paramount for career and industry success. In an effort to propagate local undergraduates with soft skill, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have agreed to comply with the “Malaysian Qualifications Framework” as the benchmark for guarantee quality. Traditionally, soft skills are “learnt” while learners are engaged in project related assignments or small group during classroom discussion and assessing if learners developed soft skills was done through Q&A sessions during presentation. However, with the nature of the Internet, there is a possibility of developing soft skills by using Web 2.0 tools during learning. This study looks at investigating the efficacy and extent of suitability of a free-formed, web-based bulletin board, Stixy, as a learning platform to inculcate soft skills through collaborative knowledge building. This study thus examines Stixy as a platform to implement soft skills amongst thirty eight (N=38) first year TESL learners in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The learners use Stixy as a bulletin board to contribute and discuss ideas to create a poster for an English Language literature assignment. Data was collected using a weekly feedback form, a questionnaire, focus-group interviews, and lecturers’ observation of discourse used by the learners in the bulletin board. Findings indicate that Stixy has succeeded to a large extent in promoting soft skills through collaborative knowledge building and was favourably adopted by the learners." @default.
