- W2760882574 abstract "Emotional contagion is considered a precursor to empathy, which is an integral component of social functioning in life. Previous research into infant emotional contagion typically utilises the “contagious crying” paradigm, which focuses solely on negative emotional contagion, invoked by the distress of others. Additionally, there has been debate as to whether contagious crying truly taps into the construct of emotional contagion. This thesis investigated the effect of laughing and crying infant videos on the joy and sadness facial expressions of adults (Experiment 1) and infants aged 6-to-12-months-old (Experiment 2). It was predicted that adults and infants would experience positive and negative emotional contagion to the laughing and crying infant videos, respectively. Additional correlations on empathy and prosociality were conducted, for adults in Experiment 1, and parents of infants in Experiment 2. It was predicted that higher empathy would correlate to higher prosociality. Adults’ and infants’ facial expressions during video conditions of infants laughing, crying, babbling, and neutral were recorded, and analysed, using a facial recognition software. Results from both experiments found stronger support for positive emotional contagion, but marginal support for negative emotional contagion. Specifically, adults showed higher percentages of joy expressions in the laughing video condition, over other video conditions. Infant facial expressions yielded no differences across conditions, but reported the highest frequency of social referencing in the laughing video condition. These findings suggest that adults and infants experience positive emotional contagion, but marginal negative emotional contagion. Implications for considering alternative forms of emotional contagion were discussed, and improving on methodological measures were discussed." @default.
