- W276091353 abstract "This chapter discusses investigations carried out to study passage of macromolecules derived from dietary protein through the gut wall and other barriers. All protein is degraded to amino acid before absorption. The young rat absorbs maternal IgG from the milk through the intestinal wall in the duodenum, as intact protein, a mechanism that serves the transfer of passive immunity. The break-down products leave the circulation very rapidly. In sheep and rabbit, the concentration peaks in the serum about 1 hour after feeding and then, for unknown reasons, declines sharply, indicating both cessation of uptake and a very short half-life. In all cases, substantial amounts of PBA is found and by 20 days, the specific activity of the fetus is greater than the maternal tissues and a significant part of the residual dose in the mother's body is in the litter. At that time, maternal and fetal blood levels are equal. On examining the carcass extracts of 20 day fetuses in the ultracentrifuge, very little 7S material is found, but a predominant peak is present at 4S that no longer reacts with specific antiserum." @default.
