- W2761169546 abstract "Six researchers in human sexuality with varying viewpoints and backgrounds discuss the social and psychological reasons for the failure of single women to use contraception. Although there is disagreement about whether girls really dont know anything about contraception these days there are problems in knowing how to obtain contraception and in many cases contraception is simply not available. In some cases previous use of contraception has resulted in failure unpleasant side effects or decrease in sexual pleasure. Some women have sex infrequently and dont consider a permanent contraceptive method and sometimes pregnancy can result from sex in a drunken and drugged state. The more important reasons for failure to use contraception are psychological factors. Many women particularly adolescents view contraceptive use as planning for sex which they feel is evil or improper or unromantic. Those girls confused about their values or sexual identity avoid contraception out of guilt. In adolescents lack of trust and communication between the partners often results in no use of contraception at all. Some women are ambivalent about their desire to prevent pregnancy. Some may feel a need to have a child as a result of depression or emptiness. These women see pregnancy as a sign of independence and affirmation of life with no relation to marital status. One doctor particularly mentioned that a failure to use contraception often occurs at a crisis period in a relationship at the beginning or end of an important stage. One particular reason for contraceptive failure indicating psychological disturbance is the use of illicit pregnancy as a tool against her family or partner as a way to rebel against her parents or trap a husband in marriage. In some cases severe psychiatric disturbances are involved. As suggested by one researcher in some cases a single woman will not use contraception simply because she wants to become pregnant and is unconcerned about being an unwed mother." @default.
