- W2762192610 abstract "How will the rise in Western populism affect the international system? Using the United States as a case study, this paper will argue that implementing a populist vision is in-compatible with the multilateral, liberal, international order. By defining populist and liberal organizing principles, analyzing the causes of conflict and stability in the international system, and, finally, by hypothesizing multiple outcomes, American populism's potentially transformative effect on international stability will be explored. Regardless of whether the populist surge ruptures the international system, which would result in increased conflict and bellicose foreign policy, the fact that there is popular concern that the liberal world order is in jeopardy raises the need for policy and perspectives to change. Policymakers need to reorient their worldview from a system defined by states to one that more accurately reflects a system of both states and networks. In so doing, the need to further norms and narratives that enable positive-sum interactions between networks and nations is imperative. It is important to note the broad terms being used when performing this analysis: populism is by no means the only political vision competing with liberal internationalism, nor are these the only two schools of thought within American political discourse. Ceteris paribus, this paper will explore the interaction between these two schools of thought and the effect on the international system." @default.
