- W2763669235 abstract "Abstract Desalination has received increasing attention globally owing to water scarcity. The aim of desalination is to develop techniques and technologies to produce potable water. Desalination methods require energy as heat, electricity, or a hybrid form of both. Nuclear energy is considered a clean, powerful, and gas emission–free option for producing power. More important, there is increasing interest in using nuclear energy for cogeneration applications (extending it to cover nonelectrical applications). Thus, integration of a desalination system with nuclear power plants (NPPs) appears to be a potential way to generate both water and electricity. Types of desalination systems can be categorized into two main groups: thermal and membrane. Multistage flash (MSF) and multieffect distillation (MED) are two available methods for thermal desalination. Reverse osmosis (RO) is used for membrane-type desalination. In this study, desalination methods such as MED, MSF, RO, and hybrid systems are considered and compared for steam, gas, and combined cycle (CC) (steam–gas)–based NPPs in terms of cost and performance by employing the Desalination Economic Evaluation Program software package. In the comparisons, the desalination capacity, water salinity, and economic factors such as the interest rate and fuel escalation are considered and evaluated for each case. The results show that RO is the more favorable method for a steam and CC-based NPP. On the other hand, multieffect distillation with a gas cycle–based NPP appears to be the most cost-effective solution." @default.
