- W2764037861 abstract "Brown trout (Salmo trutta) were introduced to New Zealand by acclimatisation societies from the 1860s onwards in efforts to establish recreational fisheries. These early liberations were extremely successful and brown trout are now the most widespread, and often the most abundant, fish species in New Zealand rivers and lakes. This has resulted in the creation of an economically and culturally important recreational fishery of world-renown. Initial reports of brown trout's impact on native fish communities were met with scepticism by many stakeholders. However, a substantial body of research has demonstrated that the introduction of brown trout has resulted in the rapid and widespread decline of New Zealand's predominantly endemic native fish fauna, especially within the family Galaxiidae. The principal causes of this decline have been predation and competition from brown trout, both for food resources and habitat. Recent research has resulted in a paradigm shift from a ‘brown trout excluded galaxiids in all cases’ perspective, to the current standpoint where the outcome of brown trout-galaxiid–interactions is dependent upon habitat complexity, environmental stability, and the life history of galaxiid species. Current management policies in New Zealand prioritise brown trout fisheries over native fish conservation, and further decline of indigenous fish communities continues. The promotion of brown trout fisheries and conservation of native fish communities are not necessarily mutually exclusive objectives, but concessions are needed on behalf of brown trout management authorities in order to ensure the long-term preservation of New Zealand's unique ichthyofauna." @default.
