- W2765252858 abstract "The efficacy of pharmacological treatment on dementia is limited. Previous studies suggest that music interventions may alleviate behavioural, emotional and cognitive symptoms of dementia. However, this hypothesis has not received support from a large-scale, randomised control trial (RCT). Using multimodal evaluations, the principle aim of this RCT was to compare the impact of musical and non-musical interventions on symptoms of dementia. 150 patients with moderate to severe dementia were randomly assigned to a music, cooking or control group. With an attrition rate of 16%, data from 126 patients were analysed (music, n = 45; cooking, n = 42; control, n = 39). Music and non-music interventions took place over 4 weeks for a total of 15 hours. Evaluations of mood (using an adapted version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults), behavioural functioning (NeuroPsychiatric Inventory, NPI; Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory, CMAI), cognitive status (Severe Impairment Battery, SIB), and caregiver distress (NPI subsection) were made before, during (weeks 2 and 4) and after (weeks 6 and 8) the intervention period, and for all groups. Longitudinal analysis (mixed model) revealed a interaction between Time and Group for the mood (p < .05) and behavioural measures (NPI severity p <.05; CMAI p < .001) of patients as well as on caregiver distress (p < .005). Post-hoc comparisons showed that the control group differed from the music and cooking interventions groups for all these variables, whereas there were no differences between the two intervention groups. Finally, there were no group differences in cognitive status (SIB). We have shown that, compared to a control group receiving standard care, music and cooking interventions can enhance mood, behavioural functioning, and can ameliorate caregiver distress. However, there was no benefit of the two interventions on the cognitive status of these patients with moderate to severe dementia. That no difference was found between the two types of interventions suggests that both music and cooking alleviate mood and behavioural symptoms of dementia. These are important results that highlight the strong potential for complementary care strategies to dramatically enhance patient well-being and caregiver distress." @default.
