- W2765674101 abstract "What are the motives and considerations of Dutch women with anticipated gamete exhaustion (AGE) considering to expand their reproductive lifespan by oocyte freezing?Woman with AGE have a wish for a child and family, which remained unfulfilled due to failed and/or delayed partnering in contemporary society. Women's fear for childlessness and optimism about their personal risk and success prognosis induces acceptance of the medical risks and limited success rates of oocyte freezing.Although fertility declines with age, many women in developed countries delay motherhood, resulting in women with anticipated gamete exhaustion (AGE). Oocyte freezing to expand women's reproductive lifespan is potentially more cost-effective than in vitro fertilization at advanced age, but professionals question the acceptability of the risks and burden for healthy women. Society often presents women opting for oocyte freezing as career women, but the voice of women with AGE has not yet been heard. This exploratory qualitative study was conducted in 2012 among twenty women with AGE from the waiting list for oocyte freezing of a Dutch Center for Reproductive Medicine. This study was exempt from medical ethics and institutional review board approval. The face-to-face in-depth interviews were guided by an open question and topic list focusing on child wish and motivations and considerations for oocyte freezing. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed by thematic analysis. All twenty participants, considering oocyte freezing, (mean age = 36 years old) were financially independent and lived in single person households in several Dutch urban areas. Participants wanted to increase their chance of having both a child and a family. Participants' need to expand their reproductive life span was induced by their inability to currently find and hold on to a suited partner and father for their child, which they related to characteristics of contemporary society. The participants were weighing the option to invest their money in freezing their oocytes for potential in vitro fertilization later in life, which has medical risks and limited success rates as they feared childlessness and were optimistic about their personal chance of medical risks and of this procedure's success.By sending a single invitation only, participants who were highly motivated to let their voice be heard, were recruited. Transferability of the findings to women less keen to participate, with less financial resources and/or from other countries and clinics should be assessed.Motivations of women with AGE are misunderstood while their voice is relevant. Fertility clinics should consider patients' perspectives on the costs, safety and effectiveness of this new technology. Women's wish for shared parenthood cannot be fulfilled by clinics offering donor insemination to these women. Initiatives to prevent delayed motherhood should consider the societal aspects that delay partnering. Further research on the transferability of the findings and on patients' optimism on their own prognosis is required.Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research and the Center for Reproductive Medicine of the University of Amsterdam.not applicable" @default.
