- W2765705968 abstract "Papaya, also known as pawpaw, is a tropical fruit with important antioxidant properties in great demand by international markets. Mexico has been ranked as the leading exporter of papaya, with 131,391 tons exported in 2014 alone. Papaya trees are commercially important crops that produce climacteric tropical fruits with a soft and sweet pulp containing a wide range of health promoting phytochemicals (bioactive components or BC) that provide several antioxidant properties. The highest concentrations of carotenoids in papaya pulp are lycopene, p-carotene, and P-cryptoxanthin; their concentration tends to increase with the process of ripening of the fruit. Phenolic compounds have been identified in saponified and non-saponified extracts of papaya peel. As a result of the presence of ascorbic acid in Carica papaya leaves, the plant can be used in herbal medicine for treatment of the common cold and other diseases, like prostate cancer." @default.
