- W2765765186 abstract "Cardiovascular disease has been studied in different population studies as risk factor for dementia. However, the role of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and obesity on the presentation and progression of cognitive impairment is limited in low and mild income countries. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of cardiovascular risk factors in the cognitive performance of dementia subjects at three years of follow-up. An analysis of population based study of 10/66 Dementia Research Group (10/66 DRG) Mexico database. We studied 95 subjects aged 65 years and older with dementia in the baseline (the diagnosis of dementia was based on the diagnostic algorithm developed for the 10/66 DRG) who were evaluated (in baseline and in follow-up) with a global cognitive score (COGSCORE). To determinate dementia progression, we compare the change between baseline and follow-up scores. We adjust linear regression model to analyze changes in COGSCORE of multivariate form. We obtain information of 95 subjects with dementia followed by three years. We found that subjects with dementia that living in rural areas had a worse performance (mean -5.0; SD = 6.7) compared with those living in an urban area (mean -2.5; SD = 6.9) (p= 0.06). In terms of cardiovascular risk factors, none showed statistical significance, with exception of self-report of heart disease, where we found a worst performance in subjects without self-report of heart disease (mean -4.4; SD 6.7) compared with subjects with self-report of disease (mean 0.2; SD = 6.9) (p= 0.02) (Table 1). After adjusting our analysis by age, level of education and catchment area, both variables (catchment area /self-report of heart disease) shown statistical significance. In this analysis, subjects with dementia living in rural area had the worst global cognitive performance, their access to medical services could cause this difference. Subjects with dementia without self-report of heart disease also had worst performance, this could be related with aware of their illness, receive treatment and better self-care. Further research should clarify the influence of management and other characteristic for this result." @default.
