- W2765795347 abstract "Cognitive frailty (CF) can be defined as the presence of physical fragility (PF) associated with cognitive impairment (CI). The integration of the cognitive component into the PF syndrome has been shown to better predict adverse outcomes such as depression than PF alone. This is a cross-sectional exploratory study conducted in Mexico City in subjects aged 50 years and older (n=513). Four subgroups were formed: CF (3.7%), PF & non-CI (4.5%), CI & non-PF (26.1%), and non-PF & non-CI (65.7%) subjects. The aim of this study was to determine the rate and risk of depression in subjects with CF and compare it to the other 3 sub-groups. The Fried frailty phenotype (2001) was used for the classification of PF. CI was defined as MMSE ≥ 21 and ≤ 26. CF was defined by the presence of PF and CI. Depression was assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). Subjects with dementia and MMSE <21 were excluded. The mean age of the subjects in the study was 71.0 ± 9.4; 80.1% were female. The rate of depression was: 94.4% for CF, 56.6% for PF & non-CI, 47.7% for CI & non-PF, and 34.1% for non-PF & non-CI. After adjusting for age and gender, the odds ratio of depression compared to non-PF & non-CI were: CF 28.4 (95%CI 3.6 - 221.7), PF & non-CI 12.7 (95%CI 1.2 - 129.1) and CI & non-PF 23.0 (95%CI 2.8 - 187.3). Our study found that subjects with cognitive frailty were more likely to have depression than any of the other subgroups. Physical frailty and cognitive impairment appear to have an additive effect on depression. The published literature regarding the association of CF and depression is still inconclusive. Properly conducted prospective studies are needed to better assess this association." @default.
