- W2766309516 abstract "There are several blood tests that comprise what are commonly known as liver function tests (LFTs). These provide clinicians with a noninvasive assessment of liver disease and are routinely used to assess in patients suspected of having liver disease, for monitoring of patients with known liver disease, and for assessing response to treatment. In order to determine the significance of abnormal LFTs, the results need to be interpreted in the appropriate clinical setting and can be used to help determine the need for additional assessments and investigations. Several tests have been developed that can assess the functional capacity of the liver, but these are rarely used in clinical practice as they are cumbersome. In recent years, several blood tests have been developed to determine the degree of liver fibrosis and these are now routinely used in clinical practice, sometimes replacing liver biopsy. Liver biopsy still remains an important tool for assessing liver disease, providing detailed assessment of the pattern of parenchymal injury and the degree of liver fibrosis. It remains the gold standard for assessment of liver disease and can be performed by percutaneous, transvenous, laparoscopic approaches or by a transluminal route guided by endoscopic ultrasound. Given the wide array of tests available for assessment of liver disease, patients should be counseled on the benefits and risks of all procedures." @default.
