- W2766430065 abstract "The majority of people with dementia show challenging behavior during the course of the disease. The project InsideDEM aims to develop a computerized expert system to support assessment of challenging behaviors and individualized intervention selection by care givers. To enable automated behavior detection using sensor data such system needs real world training data to provide a ground truth. This data set must include both sensor data and fine-grained annotation of behavior. We conducted a field study in two German nursing homes using on-site annotations as well as fine-grained video annotations. Behaviors were annotated using the established dementia care mapping as well as a newly developed annotation scheme over 29 days. This scheme included the most frequent behaviors from the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and Cohen-Mansfield-Agitation-Inventory as annotation categories: Aggression, performing repetitious mannerisms, pacing, apathy, general restlessness, trying to get to a different place. On-site annotations were obtained in five minute intervals. During the field study, the participants were mounted with sensor bracelets on the ankle and the wrist. Videos were annotated off-line based on the on-site annotations using the new annotation scheme. Inter-rater reliability was established after rater training using concrete behavioral anchors. 17 participants were recruited in two nursing homes, suffering from moderate to severe stages of dementia according to the Global Deterioration Scale. Multimodal sensor data and behavioral annotations were obtained for all 17 participants; videos were recorded for a subgroup of 8 participants during 29 consecutive days. Cohens Kappa of the video annotations was 0.75 for repetitive mannerisms, and 0.84 for pacing behavior. Further results will be presented at the conference. We obtained an extensive multimodal data set of naturally occurring challenging behavior in people with moderate to severe dementia. This data set was obtained in the routine setting of two nursing homes, in cooperation with nursing staff and scientists of different domains such as cognitive psychology, computer and nursing science and medicine. Using these data, sensor features will be developed to identify challenging behavior." @default.
