- W2766515739 abstract "The MIND diet was developed specifically to promote brain health. Higher MIND scores have been associated previously with reduced Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a slower rate of cognitive decline in a sample of older adults from Chicago USA [1,2]. Associations between diet and cognition may vary according to geographic, demographic, and cultural factors. Our study tested if the protective effects of the MIND diet generalized to an Australian population. Participants (n= 1,228) aged 72–76 (50.7% female) were drawn from the PATH Study, a longitudinal study of health and ageing based in Canberra, ACT. MIND diet scores were calculated from a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire administered at baseline. At follow-up, participants were screened for cognitive decline. Health information and informant ratings were used to clinically categorise those with a cognitive disorder or evidence of cognitive decline according to current and prior neuro-psychological performance. Logistic regression tested the association between MIND diet and diagnosis. Covariates replicated those used in the U.S sample and included baseline energy intake, age, sex, years of education, apoe4 status, physical and mental activity participation, smoking history, depressive symptoms, and health status; i.e. variables for BMI, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes or stroke. In fully adjusted models, MIND diet score was associated with a 20% reduction in the odds of 12-year incident cognitive impairment (OR=0.79, 95% CI 0.65, 0.96; B= -0.23, p=0.017) as defined by a diagnoses of AD (NINCDSADRDA criteria) VaD (NINDSAIREN criteria), MCI (Winblad criteria), or previously diagnosed dementia. Apoe-e4 was the only other variable that contributed significantly to the model (OR=2.22, 95% CI 1.41, 3.47; B=0.79, p<.001). The interaction term for MINDxApoe-e4 was non-significant. When the MIND score was split into tertiles, those in the highest tertile of MIND diet had a 46% reduction in the odds of impairment (OR=0.54, 95% CI 0.30 0.96; B=- 0.61, p=.038). Our study provides evidence that the MIND diet is protective of long-term cognitive health and that effects are generalizable to a sample outside the USA. These findings support recommending consumption of the MIND diet to reduce the risk of later cognitive impairment." @default.
