- W2766798607 abstract "Personnality traits have been linked to higher risk of dementia. We investigated the asociation between cynical distrust and incident Alzheimer's Disease (AD) over 10 years. We studied 1388 individuals without dementia from a cohort of community-dwelling persons aged 65 to 80 years (The ESPRIT study). Cynical distrust was measured based on The Buss and Durkee Hostility Inventory and was defined as none, intermediate and high. AD was diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were used to measure cerebral atrophy. The association between cynical distrust level and incident AD and mortality was studied over 10 years using Cox regression models controlling for potential confounders (age, sex, education, smoking status, alcohol use, diabetes, BMI, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular pathologies, depressive symptomatology, anxiety, self-reported poor health, Mini-Mental-state Examination total score and APOE4 genotype). The association between cynical distrust level and cerebral atrophy was studied using ANOVA. A higher cynical distrust is associated with incident AD in crude analysis and after adjusting for confounders (HR: 2.74 [1.10–6.85], p=0.03). A high and intermediate level of cynical distrust were also associated with cerebral atrophy (p<0.01). We found no relationship between cynical distrust level and mortality over 10 years. Higher cynical distrust in late life is associated with incident AD. This finding suggests that psychosocial risk factors may be modifiable targets for interventions." @default.
