- W2766884433 abstract "Emotion recognition deficits are predictive for diagnosing behavioural-variant Frontotemporal Dementia (bvFTD), relative to Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, little is known about how the neuropsychiatric symptoms in bvFTD, such as perseveration, impact emotion recognition. In the current study, we investigated emotion recognition error patterns in bvFTD, AD and Controls, to explore how behavioural disturbance might impact emotion recognition task performance. More specifically, we investigated whether bvFTD patients show more generalised deficits due to behavioural disturbances, or misclassify specific emotions. 64 participants (bvFTD = 23; AD = 18; Control = 23) completed the Mini-Social Cognition and Emotion Assessment (Mini-SEA), which comprises a facial emotion recognition task whereby participants categorise Ekman faces as showing either: Anger; Disgust; Fear; Happiness; Neutral; Sadness; Surprise. Data were operationalised as percentage of total errors, with error patterns analysed accordingly: 1) Perseveration –selecting the same [wrong] emotion on consecutive trials; 2) Response Bias – selecting a specific emotion across all error trials; 3) Specific Emotion Recognition Deficit – selection errors patterns when viewing each of the seven emotions. Overall, the bvFTD group made significantly [ps < .012] more errors than either AD or Control groups. The patient groups did notdiffer on: 1) Perseveration [p = .167], but did differ marginally [p = .057] on 2) Response Bias, with the bvFTD group selecting Happiness more than the AD group. Addressing 3) Specific Emotion Recognition Deficit, all groups miscategorised Fear as Surprise most often [M = 33%], although this error was equally common across groups [p = .162]. Instead, the bvFTD group were significantly [ps < .032] more likely than the AD group to miscategorise Surprise into Neutral, and Fear into Sadness. The current data suggest that the neuropsychiatric symptoms, e.g. perseveration, inherent in bvFTD patients do not impact their facial emotion recognition performance. Instead, bvFTD patients displayed a selective deficit when recognising Surprise and Fear, relative to patients with AD, and also a general response bias towards Happiness. To test the robustness of these data, the Mini-SEA may benefit from less ambiguous Fear faces, and from counterbalancing response option order (Happiness currently appears first)." @default.
